I love a busy rental operation — all the interaction between our staff and customers. That is so satisfying. One interaction I would love to stop is that of thieves trying to disrupt our businesses. Burglary is huge. So is cybertheft. Our operation has dealt with both.

For Andy Jones, CERP, co-owner, Red Hat Rentals in Athens, Fairfield and Palestine, Texas, and co-owner, Tyler Tents and Events, Tyler, Texas, the cyber nightmare began when he was contacted by his financial advisers at Schwab asking whether he wanted to take money out of his account. It just escalated from there.

Gerhardt “Gary” Helfmann, president, A-1 Lansing Rent-All in Lansing, Mich., will never forget Feb. 13, 2023. It was the day his rental operation of 36 years was burglarized, which quickly spiraled into cybertheft and more.  

The more we rely on technology, the more we increase the risk of a cyber breach. According to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, there have been over 150,000 reports of cyberfraud in Canada with over $600 million stolen since January 2021. The stats go on and on, but the chilling bottom line is that we are vulnerable to costly cybercrimes every day.
