Hello, American Rental Association (ARA) members in Region Five. I am Brandon Hanson, owner of Rent-It, an equipment and event rental operation in Monroe, Wis. I also serve as ARA of Wisconsin president. We have a lot happening in our region and with ARA at the national level. Thank you for allowing me to give you a quick update.

The love of rental runs deep in the Jones family of Burton, Mich. When they saw their family equipment rental business falter after their father, Chester, sold it in the early 1980s, brothers Bruce and Larry joined him not only in resuming ownership but also in bringing the business back. That was 1984, and the business, Allied Rent-All/Allied Equipment Rental, has been thriving ever since.

The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic gave a painful gut-punch to every event rental business. Those that survived saw new growth opportunities emerge. That is particularly true for Indianapolis-based Indiana Wedding Decorators and Ace Party Rental.

Hello, American Rental Association (ARA) Region Five members. Amid all our normal day-to-day activities, we always need to be mindful of forces that want to disrupt our businesses. I am talking about cyber hackers. This is a real threat, whether you are a small or large operation. Learn in this issue how to take the appropriate precautions. On a more positive note, the state chapters in our region have been busy offering great member events.

Gerhardt “Gary” Helfmann, president, A-1 Lansing Rent-All in Lansing, Mich., will never forget Feb. 13, 2023. It was the day his rental operation of 36 years was burglarized, which quickly spiraled into cybertheft and more.

Thirty-two years ago, Robert Sloan, president, Contractors Equipment Rentals, Elmhurst, Ill., took what he thought was a temporary job helping his father, Stan, launch a new equipment rental operation as he finished his MBA.
