This is it — my final message as your American Rental Association (ARA) Region Ten director. They aren’t kidding when they say that the three-year term in this role goes by in the blink of an eye! I am so proud that my term has been surrounded by the progress made through the ARA of Canada initiative. Take a look at what we have accomplished on behalf of our Canadian members.

I recently traveled to the American Rental Association’s (ARA) headquarters in Moline, Ill., to take part in the ARA Executive Committee meeting. As a member of the association’s Event Rental Advocacy Workgroup, I was able to weigh in on conversations concerning the state of event rentals and I was happy to be able to tell the committee — based on what I am seeing out there in my rental segment — that events are back.

The approach to our slower season is always a good time to look at improving our businesses — especially in the area of cybersecurity due to all the risks that go along with that. Recently at our company we implemented dual authentication and email training. We luckily have not had any issues, but I wanted to make sure that we were being proactive.

The more we rely on technology, the more we increase the risk of a cyber breach. According to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, there have been over 150,000 reports of cyberfraud in Canada with over $600 million stolen since January 2021. The stats go on and on, but the chilling bottom line is that we are vulnerable to costly cybercrimes every day.

Happy September! We made it through another spring and summer, and I hope everyone has a busy fall to look forward to. With the day-to-day bustle in our rental companies, one thing that can often be overlooked is cybersecurity. Cyberfraud truly is all around us.
