Equipment rental is unquestionably trending toward a low- and zero-emission future. 

Rental Management recently spoke to Kris Kiser, president, Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI), Alexandria, Va., regarding the electrification of outdoor power equipment.

Powering up is becoming something of a problem for rental companies who present product line diversity in their equipment fleets: Fuel is fuel as far as gas-powered equipment goes, but battery charging systems can vary across manufacturers. 

As electrification becomes more commonplace in equipment rental fleets, so do certain myths along with emerging risks and uncertainties surrounding battery-powered equipment. Here are some examples of each and how some in the industry are reacting to them:

Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE), Gothenburg, Sweden, is making available its 48V direct current (DC) protocol for electric charging solutions.

The battery-powered TB20e compact excavator from Takeuchi Manufacturing (U.S.), Pendergrass, Ga., will run for approximately eight hours on a full charge at 65 percent load.
