ARA of New Hampshire’s president talks about business succession

Hello, American Rental Association (ARA) Region One members. I hope it’s been a great spring rental season for you so far. I’m Allison McIntosh, co-owner of Taylor True Value Rental in Concord, N.H., and president of the ARA of New Hampshire, and I’m pleased to be able to share a few thoughts with you.

As some of you may know, my partner, Jason Weir, and I took over ownership of our store in January from Mark and Cate Dartnell — two long-standing members of the rental community here in our region. As you can imagine, there are a lot of moving parts to the process of taking over a 53-year-old, industry-leading business. Of course there are many logistical matters to attend to like financing and legalities, but you also have to keep the day-to-day business running smoothly while assuring loyal customers that they can trust you to meet their needs just like they had the former owners.

Our acquisition of the business was certainly eye-opening. But every business succession story is unique, and if you are considering buying or selling a rental business, I think you’ll find the information shared in the cover story in the April/May issue of Rental Management to be insightful.
